I need some help converting HTML to XHTML:

1. I need to change or add a charset
2. I need to get rid of an error without changing the layout on my page.

I checked on the validator and I see many more errors than those two. You need to revise the whole coding and make use of CSS instead of using HTML color properties etc. You also lack a doctype, that's the base of a valid coding, it's explained on the tutorial.
