how to use textures??

i recently decided to dabble in avatar-making, so i read all the tutorials, downloaded everything i need, but......i don't know how to actually ADD the texture to my layer.
...like, am i supposed to fill the layer (like you do with a pattern)? or am i supposed to copy/paste like i do with the image??

i'm sorry if this is a really lame question, but i'd really like to know how to do it properly, you know??

Using textures is really easy! All you have to do is copy and paste it and then change the layer blending mode [i.e. overlay]. Choose the best blending mode that fits with your image.
