Distant Wish - Translators needed
« on: April 13, 2007, 05:21:35 PM »

Hey people, some of you may know that I'm currently in the process of creating a multi-lingual web design site. Currently we're in need of a lot more translators and would be interested in anyone who is fluent in English and at least one other language, preferably with English not being their first language (ie. you're a native speaker of the language you'll be translating into). You'll be working along side several members of this site, such as Melfina, Blackstone, Black Cinderella, Assie-chan, Alis and Arwen.

Currently we have support for 6 languages, however we have only a single translator for each language. For various reasons we will require 'teams' of translators before we consider adding support for a language. We will need teams of at least 3 people for these tasks. The work that will be required is very minimal, and can be done with a single person, however due to the fact that it is the internet, and people do have other priorities, relying on a single person has proven to be very inefficient with various languages dragging behind others in terms of completion. Having teams of 3 or more people will ensure that we will 'always' have at least 1 translator available to do the job.

We're currently dealing with the following languages:

  • English - obviously we don't need translators for this language.
  • German.
  • Italian.
  • Spanish.
  • Russian.
  • Swedish.

We would love for more translators for our current languages, but would also love to add more languages to this list. Anyone is welcome, and very minimal coding experience is required. All work is done in an online administration panel which has various features. Work that is required to be done is highlighted clearly in this panel, and notes are provided, so the work will always be clear. I have developed a versions control system for the templates engine that the website runs on, so should you make a mistake, no problem, you can just revert to an older version of a template in just a few clicks.

The translators would be working for a web design site/community called Distant Wish. Distant Wish is a project currently still in the development stages, but is soon to be released and opened to the public. Once opened, Distant Wish will be a place where programmers, designers, and web administrators alike will be able to find resources and help on various web-related topics. Members will be able to submit graphics and pre-designed layouts which will be run through an approval process before being displayed on the site for others to download and use. In addition to resources, members can chat on forums to discuss issues, find and offer help and services, and other such things. There are also sections on Distant Wish where users can read tutorials and receive feedback on their websites.

Please feel free to ask me any questions you may have, however I ask that you ask any non-personal questions here for the benefit of other members. Anybody wishing to apply should PM me with contact details, it is required that you frequently use some form of instant messenger to make contact quick and easy.

A bit of a disclaimer:
I must state that all work is volunteer and non-paid work. All applicants will be decided on by a majority vote from members of the current team. We reserve the right to refuse any applicant, for any reason, we are also not obligated to inform you of said reason of refusal.

There seems to be quite a bit of confusion regarding what languages we're dealing in. The list above is the languages we have translators for, however, if you are fluent in any of the languages listed above, then please contact us! We will accept any language providing there is enough people to make the team. Even if you do not know anyone else to form a team with, please contact us anyway.

Excellent, thank you very much! I'll contact her. Smiley

I'll also remove her email address from your post for her privacy and also to stop her getting spammed.

Is there still time to send an application? Because I'm going to have loads of free time now, being unemployed and no school.

If there's still time, I probably will apply.

Well, I only know Malay, something rather similar to Indonesian, but I don't think I can be of any help. And I'm still in school, so I don't think I'll have time to help with translating.. But, I'll try to help -- one day when I'm free  Smiley

You can use "Google Translates" If you type in your Adress and switch the option to "English to .INSTERT LANGUGAGE." it'll give you the Url in your URL bar and just copy it nd have a splash page before your Websites with the Flags and put "Choose Language" and just use the Image w/ a link feature and it translates the site! But it will be scambled in some languages, like German, since the sentances are formed differently.

I'll show you with my site.
http://freewebs.com/deadlykunoichi

Now, turn it into Italian using this Page URL
http://www.google.com/translate_t

The Site now looks like this:
http://www.google.com/translate?u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.freewebs.com%2Fdeadlykunoichi%2Findex2.html&langpair=en%7Cit&hl=en&ie=UTF8

Isnt that cool? xD

Where do I begin with this one... XD

Firstly, try typing a paragraph into any translation program, then paste the result back into the program and reverse the translation. You'll never get anything like you intended. Secondly, it is more than just the German language that has different grammar. You can never beat a competent translator who knows proper grammar for their language. Thirdly, Distant Wish will never have a splash page for something like this.

I've created the site to be entirely run off a templates engine. This engine detects the users selected language via a number of different input methods. It then creates a series of class functions that I can call at any time to get a template file. This way, I don't need numerous PHP files, I simply code the site to how I normally would and call the templates function. It gets the data from the file for the proper language, then displays it to the user.

So I'm sorry, but no, Google Translations are not cool, but never-the-less, thank you for the suggestion. Smiley
