A Little Simple Wall Work...
« on: February 12, 2008, 06:07:50 PM »

I believe I've been on CS for about a year now, and within that year I've only have about 5 approved avatars.

._. I have some work to do...So because of my lack of attention for anything...yeah..I decided to stop making avatars for a bit (since in truth I have made over 100 avatars in the last month but I'm just putting that out there...) I started making wall papers in the last 2 weeks. They're not the "greatest" looking walls, in fact, they are very simple and the backgrounds are a bit repetative with the brushes I use. I'm not a professional so I wouldn't expect them to have that pro look anyway. Most of the renders I used came from here( Smiley) and Xiao Star(^^) and the brushes I used can be found somewhere on dA ^^; So umm...I guess you can check it out now....

Wanna see more just ask....^^

Well they are pretty good for a start, and i like the red (the 7th one) a lot, but here's some tips/criticism:
  • try to be a bit more creative than a PNG on a background (i personally have seen that way to many times...)
  • If you are going to do that, try blending the PNG into the background with some blur, color,or glow effects.  You did a good job with this on 7th one ^^.  I like how it came out Smiley
  • For wallpaper making in general, it's good to make wallpapers in a variety of different resolutions, especially if your planning to make them available to other people.(but that's a bit irrelevant Stressed XD)
  • Try to add more effects to the background. Instead of a few simple brushes, add some more variety in brushes and try out your own effects.  Plus the space after the Pngs is very ....large..and in my opinion can be filled up
EditBut vangs does make a extremely good point about it is wallpaper art, and there should be space for desktop icons, etc. (i barely have one row of icons so i never think about that >.<)
  • Try to give variety in your wallpapers, they seem very similar....
I tried to give constructive criticism and I hope that does help ^^
Just try experimenting and playing around :D

Contrary to what chandni has just stated I quite like the large open spaces in the wallpapers. When I set an image as my wallpaper, I hate when it is very busy. I tend to be very minimalist and have little or no desktop icons, but in the instances that I do, I love to have space to comfortably put them over a wallpaper. Remember these aren't just pieces of graphics, you need to consider their intended use (which so many people don't) and create space that someone can place their icons and still comfortably read their text labels. Otherwise no-one will actually use the wallpaper.

Now on to my critique, each wallpaper is pretty decent in itself -- although number 1 really stands out to me. The background theme fits really well with the character -- the character is a good size for the wallpaper too. Not only that, but it would be a very practical wallpaper -- good 'eye candy' and plenty of space for icons.

Wallpaper number 2 seems somewhat over-exposed to me. The character has been brightened too much and is has made it lose some detail. The background could also use some work -- there's nothing wrong with the background as a graphical piece, it just doesn't fit well with the character. The text could also do with some work in this piece.

Wallpapers 3 and 4 are very plain in my opinion and while practical, don't offer much to urge a user to set them as their desktop wallpaper. Wallpaper 3 again could use some work on the text too. Wallpaper 5 is the worst of the bunch, the background doesn't match the characters, they seem to have just been thrown on top of a generic star background. The text again could use some work in this piece.

Wallpaper 6 is very simplistic, but pulls it off nicely. The only real criticism I can offer on this piece is to watch your cutting, there is a lot of white edges around the characters which really stands out on this background. The text could also use some work in this piece, simply a font change with a bit of alias should do.

Wallpaper 7 I actually don't like. The theme to it is nice, however the actual composition and functionality of the wallpaper isn't. You have done a good job of bringing the character into the background of the wallpaper, but the background seems a bit low quality. The text is again poor in this piece.

Wallpaper 8 is really good, not personally my style, but I could see it appealing to quite a few people. Again the only real criticism for this piece is the text.

Hope this helps. Smiley

Thanks alot, both of you! Wallpaper 7 was originally my favourite because I created that background with a basic brush and some weird effects that I can't explain to this day.  Shocked But thanks again Vangs and Chandni for the constructive criticism but I'm gonna go back to my avatars soon, untill then I'm going to play around with these backgrounds and develope my own style. The only sad part about my graphics that I see is that most of my work is very simple, and it stays that way because I'm too scared to try something more advance. When I do try something more advanced I get disappointed when it doesn't come out right... Disappointed
